DIGITAL SAT READING & WRITING PREP

Digital SAT Reading & Writing Prep Built Around Your Weakest Skills

You may not need “more English.”

You may need to fix inference. Or transitions. Or punctuation. Or words in context. Or the way you choose evidence.

PRiSM diagnoses exactly where your Reading & Writing score is being lost, builds your course around those skills, and keeps adapting as you improve.

KNOW THE TEST

One short passage. One precise question. Four skill domains.

Digital SAT Reading & Writing contains 54 questions in 64 minutes, split into two 32-minute adaptive modules. Each question is paired with its own short passage or passage pair.

Unlike the old SAT, you do not read several long passages followed by groups of questions. Each short passage or passage pair comes with one precise question.

WHY R&W FEELS UNPREDICTABLE

R&W plateaus when shortcuts replace reasoning.

At easier difficulty levels, a shortcut can look like a strategy. At harder levels, the question changes just enough for the shortcut to stop working.

Reading for gist instead of evidence

The right answer must satisfy the exact claim the question asks you to prove — not simply sound compatible with the passage.

Read for evidence

Memorizing vocabulary without reading context

Words in Context questions test what a word means here, not everything it can mean in a dictionary.

Find meaning in context

Matching grammar patterns without understanding the sentence

Punctuation becomes much more predictable when you understand clause structure and the relationship between ideas.

Understand sentence structure

Doing more questions without diagnosing why you missed them

If an inference mistake and a punctuation mistake are treated simply as two “wrong questions,” the practice data is not being used.

Diagnose the exact R&W skills that are costing you points.

PACE does not begin with the assumption that every student needs every lesson. It measures performance at the skill level.

02 · LEARN · READING

Read for evidence, not intuition.

The hardest reading questions are rarely solved by asking, “What sounds right?” A repeatable reasoning process starts with the task and works from the evidence.

  1. Identify the taskWhat exactly is the question asking you to establish?
  2. Read the relevant evidenceWhat does the text explicitly state or logically support?
  3. Define the constraintWhat must be true for an answer to satisfy the question?
  4. Evaluate choices against the evidenceDo not ask whether an answer seems plausible. Ask whether the text earns it.
Reading · evidence & reasoning

Does the text earn the answer?

The taskWhat exactly must this answer establish?
The evidenceWhat does the passage actually support?
The constraintWhat must be true — not just plausible?
Evaluate every choice against the same evidence.

This approach applies across inference, command of evidence, central ideas, text purpose and cross-text questions.

02 · LEARN · WRITING

Learn grammar and rhetoric from meaning.

R&W is not a collection of punctuation tricks. A comma, semicolon, transition or verb form is correct because of the structure and meaning of the sentence around it.

Independent and dependent clauses
Logical relationships between ideas
Sentence boundaries
Modifier relationships
Verb and pronoun relationships
Rhetorical goals
Transitions between ideas
Instead of memorizing“When you see X, choose Y.”
Learn to ask“What job must this word or punctuation mark perform here?”

WHAT REAL STUDENT DATA REVEALS

The most popular answer can still be wrong.

On one hard Digital SAT transition question analyzed by PRiSM, 53% of attempts selected “However,” while 29% selected the correct answer.

The interesting part was not only the error rate: students answering incorrectly took almost exactly as long as students answering correctly. The analysis points to the method, rather than simple rushing.

Students recognized an apparent contrast and reached for a contrast transition. But the blank itself required a cause-and-effect relationship.

Hard R&W questions punish pattern matching. Identify the logical job the blank, sentence, or piece of evidence must perform before evaluating answer choices.

03 · CEMENT

Prove the skill still works when the passage changes.

Seeing one inference question correctly does not prove inference mastery. Neither does answering one punctuation question correctly. PRiSM checks whether performance holds across different passages, wording, difficulty levels, distractor patterns, and mixed skills.

01

Standard cementing

Build dependable performance on representative questions.

Understand the underlying skill
02

Hard cementing

Prove the method still works when the question becomes less obvious.

Reproduce the reasoning

The goal is not to remember a question. It is to reproduce the reasoning.

"I came in at 660 — solid, but stuck. PRiSM's PACE diagnosis named exactly the four concept gaps I'd been masking with pattern-matching. The course taught them from fundamentals. Hard cementing wouldn't let me move on until I'd really held the score. Test day, I hit 790."

"What clicked for me was the LEARN units — every concept built from why the rule exists, not 'here's a trick.' The PACE diagnostic skipped what I already knew, so I wasn't sitting through hours of grammar I had down. I just crossed 750 on the sectional. Aiming for 780 by test day."

01What is tested on SAT Reading and Writing?
The Digital SAT Reading & Writing section covers four domains: Information and Ideas, Craft and Structure, Expression of Ideas, and Standard English Conventions. Together they test reading comprehension, evidence, inference, vocabulary in context, rhetorical reasoning, grammar, sentence structure and punctuation.
02How many questions are on SAT Reading and Writing?
There are 54 Reading & Writing questions in two 32-minute modules, giving students 64 minutes in total.
03Is SAT Reading and Writing the same as SAT English or SAT Verbal?
“Reading and Writing” is College Board’s official name for the section. Students sometimes call it SAT English or SAT Verbal, but the current Digital SAT combines reading, rhetoric, vocabulary and Standard English skills into one Reading & Writing score.
04Does PRiSM cover both reading and grammar?
Yes. The course covers all four official R&W domains, including inference and evidence-based reading, vocabulary in context, rhetorical analysis and synthesis, transitions, sentence boundaries, grammar and sentence structure.
05How do I improve from around 650 to 750+ in R&W?
The answer depends on which skills are causing the remaining misses. A student losing points on inference needs a different plan from one losing points on boundaries or rhetorical synthesis. PRiSM therefore begins with a diagnostic and uses the results to prioritize the individual skills most likely to improve that student’s score.
06Why is doing thousands of questions not enough?
Practice is useful only when it improves the underlying process. Repeating questions while using the same flawed reasoning can reinforce the same error. PRiSM connects practice to diagnosis, instruction and mastery checks so that mistakes change what happens next.
07Can I try the Reading & Writing course free?
Yes. PRiSM currently offers seven days of full platform access without requiring a credit card.
